Race Phrases
PR…personal record, running a set distance in less time than you ran it previously
Relay race…a team of runners work together to cover the distance of the race, each runner runs a portion of the distance
Negative split…running the second half of a race in less time than you ran the first half.
Hydrate…drink something (good for you)!
Heart rate monitor… a monitor you wear which tracks your heart beats, so you know when you are running not hard enough, hard enough, or too hard
Electrolytes… stuff inside you, or a sports drink, that replenishes, re-energizes you. From http://science.howstuffworks.com: electrolytes are salt in your blood. When you exercise heavily, you lose electrolytes in your sweat, particularly sodium and potassium. These electrolytes must be replaced to keep the electrolyte concentrations of your body fluids constant. So, many sports drinks have sodium chloride or potassium chloride added to them.
Gatorade…a beverage that replenishes lost fluids in your body, giving you the energy to keep going
The Chip… a computer chip that automatically records your time in a race. It clips onto your shoe lace and each time you pass over a marker in the race, it records your time.
Clydesdale… not your typical skinny, lanky runner phsyisique, a “Clydesdale” is a bigger sized runner
Chute… at the finish line of some races, runners are corralled into lines or ‘chutes’ in order to record their finishing times. You enter the chute in the order in which you crossed the finish line. This method is used in races that do not use the Chip, in which case one might think, “Aw, Chute.”
Autopilot... a feeling of ‘effortlessness’ when you are running..like your legs just keep going as if they are on Autopilot
Runner’s High… an elusive condition that occurs to lucky runners described as a great euphoria felt during a run
